The LowTides Season 4 Collection features a new Artist Series by watercolorist, Evelyn Henson.
We chatted with the artist about her inspiration behind her celebrated gift and lifestyle brand.
How Did You Find Out About LowTides?
One of the co-founders, Elizabeth approached me directly as a follower of my brand and a fan of my art. I hadn't previously known about LowTides, but I was fortunate to learn more about their mission and products, which have been featured in Forbes, Coastal Living, and Vogue.
How Did You Get Started?
Initially, I opened an Etsy shop to sell art prints and original works almost ten years ago. I slowly grew my collection and brand from there and now have a full e-commerce site at www.evelynhenson.com featuring my artwork on various gift and home items, which include other brand collaborations from rugs to wallpaper.
What would you say is your signature aesthetic?
An Evelyn Henson trademark design is classic and timeless with a colorful, whimsical, and joyful twist. I love bright colors and the soft pastels that a watercolor palette offers. Many of my prints are giving a personalized, colorful hand to the ordinary everyday items. For example, my recent Matchbox Series highlights favorite professional teams, frequented restaurants, and college mascots for the die hard fans.
How did you come up with it?
I am naturally drawn to brighter color palettes but find I prefer pieces with a more timeless feel. My art style has naturally developed from those innate preferences.
What Inspires You?
Everyday life strikes me with inspiration often! Several of my pieces are inspired by interactions with friends and family. For example, I created an annual dog calendar so I could include my familys' dogs on the pages. I also find so much inspiration in the flowers, plants, and seashells I find outside on walks. Picasso says "inspiration exists, but it has to find you working" and I find that to be very true with my art in that inspiration is everywhere! I enjoy flipping through old books as well. A recent favorite is "The Cabinet of Natural Curiosities" which has some neat illustrations of coral reefs and shells on the pages.
We Have To Know, Where Is Your Beach?
I grew up visiting my grandparents in Sea Island, Georgia so that beach will forever have my heart! I treasure my memories of visiting them there and still think it's the best place to this day.
