HOW DO WE MAKE YOUR CHAIR OUT OF 3 LBS OF OCEAN PLASTICS?

Around the world, humans use about 300 million tons of plastic every year, 50% of which is for single-use purposes – utilized for just a few moments, but lasting on the planet for several hundred years.

While we might not be able to go back in time, we can make the best of the situation in front of us. That is why we are making chairs out 3 lbs of upcycled ocean plastics. How are our chairs made you ask? Great question. It all starts with a not so little enemy called litter.

Most plastic waste is disposed of by customers after a single use. (Laundry detergent jugs, water bottles, plastic bags and straws)
Lacking proper recycling education and infrastructure to manage waste properly leads to plastics entering our shorelines, rivers, streams and oceans.
Local groups and non-profits lead environmental efforts to collect trash and plastic waste from the environment.
Recycling efforts sort out reusable material including High-density polyethylene plastic (HDPE) from single use plastic containers.
HDPE is then broken down into tiny pellets and upcycled for production of LowTides' beach chairs.
LowTides' stylish and socially responsible beach chair is made with 3 pounds of upcycled ocean plastic.

From the collection stage to its completion, the chair-building process takes about 16 weeks, roughly a New Jersey summer. Throughout the 16 week production, each of our stylish and durable chairs removes 3 lbs of ocean bound plastic in an effort to save the beauty of the oceans for future generations.
